Mariana Bekerman, Artistic Director of Mariana Bekerman Dance
Melanie is not only a delight to work with (easy going, has a creative eye, economical and practical, etc.), but she's also a designer who has a full understanding of production, process, timeline, and meeting one's needs. She completely took charge of her assignment while working with me on my production of Black & White in late 2009. I had no need to be even a bit concerned when it came to my costumes for the pieces she would design. Being she's a choreographer herself, I think it made my process with her all the more smoother. She came in, viewed rehearsals, and we briefly chatted about the show as a whole & about each piece that she would be working on. When one is in need of costume design for modern dance, Melanie Cortier is the one!

Justin Allen, award-winning novelist and author of The Beatitudes (New York International Fringe Festival, 2010)
Melanie Cortier's costume designs pop on the stage without overwhelming dancer or audience. For The Beatitudes her designs emphasized the era and theme of mid-century counterculture America, without drowning the dancers in fabric or binding them in stitches. In short, her costumes look great, help to tell a story or emphasize a theme, and most importantly - they Move!
